PageSpeed Insights

Definition

PageSpeed Insights is a free Google tool that scores a web page's loading performance on mobile and desktop and suggests specific fixes to make it faster.

PageSpeed Insights report parts: LCP, INP and CLS Core Web Vitals plus the 0 to 100 performance score.

What Is PageSpeed Insights?

PageSpeed Insights (often shortened to PSI) is a free tool from Google that analyzes how quickly and smoothly a web page loads. You enter a URL and it returns a performance report for both mobile and desktop, along with a list of opportunities and diagnostics explaining what is slowing the page down.

The report combines two kinds of data. Field data comes from real Chrome users who visited the page over recent weeks, when enough visits exist. Lab data comes from a simulated test run by Lighthouse, Google’s open-source auditing tool, under controlled conditions.

Why PageSpeed Insights Matters

Page speed affects both visitors and search engines. Slow pages frustrate people, especially on mobile connections, and frustrated visitors leave. Google also uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, as part of how it evaluates pages.

  • Faster pages tend to keep visitors engaged and lower your bounce rate.
  • Better load performance can help landing pages convert more of your paid traffic.
  • Good page experience supports SEO, although relevance and content quality still matter more.
  • PSI gives non-developers a clear, shareable way to spot problems.

How PageSpeed Insights Works

Core Web Vitals

The field data section focuses on Core Web Vitals, Google’s main user experience metrics:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long it takes for the main content, often a hero image or headline, to appear.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds when someone taps, clicks or types.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout jumps around unexpectedly while loading.

Each metric is rated good, needs improvement or poor, and the page passes the assessment when it meets the “good” thresholds for real users.

Performance Score

The lab section produces a performance score from 0 to 100 based on simulated metrics. This score can vary between runs, so treat it as a directional guide rather than an exact grade.

Opportunities and Diagnostics

PSI lists specific improvements, such as compressing images, removing unused JavaScript and CSS, reducing server response time and avoiding render-blocking resources.

PageSpeed Insights in Automotive Marketing

Automotive websites are often heavy, which makes PSI especially useful.

  • Dealer websites load large inventory photo galleries, chat widgets, trade-in tools, payment calculators and many tracking scripts. Each one adds weight, and vehicle detail pages frequently score poorly on mobile as a result.
  • Collision and repair shops may use page builders and large unoptimized photos that slow down the service pages people visit from Google Maps.
  • Parts ecommerce stores with fitment lookup tools and app-heavy themes can see slow product and category pages, which hurts both shopping ad performance and organic visibility.

For example, a wrap shop showcasing high-resolution project photos could run its gallery page through PSI, find that oversized images dominate load time, and fix it by serving compressed, properly sized images.

Best Practices

  • Prioritize mobile. Most local and automotive searches happen on phones, so focus on mobile results first.
  • Test key templates. Check your homepage, top landing pages, product or vehicle pages and booking pages, not just one URL.
  • Optimize images. Use modern formats, proper sizing and lazy loading for photos below the fold.
  • Audit third-party scripts. Remove tags and widgets you no longer use, and load the rest efficiently.
  • Use a CDN and good hosting. Fast servers and edge delivery reduce load times everywhere.
  • Don’t chase a perfect 100. Aim for passing Core Web Vitals and a better user experience, not a vanity score.
