MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price)

Definition

MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) is the price an automaker recommends dealers sell a new vehicle for, shown on the window sticker.

MSRP formula: base price plus options plus destination equals MSRP, a hypothetical $40,000 example.

What Is MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price)?

MSRP is the price a manufacturer recommends for a new vehicle. For cars sold in the United States, it is printed on the Monroney sticker, which breaks out the base price, the cost of each factory option, and the destination charge, then shows the total.

The key word is “suggested.” In the U.S., dealers are independent businesses and generally set their own selling prices. A dealer can sell below MSRP using discounts and incentives, or above it with a market adjustment when demand is high.

Why MSRP Matters

MSRP is the reference point for nearly every new-car pricing conversation.

  • Shopper anchor. Buyers judge a deal by how far the selling price sits from MSRP.
  • Competitive comparison. Shoppers compare vehicles and trims by MSRP before they ever talk to a dealer.
  • Lease math. Residual values on leases are typically set as a percentage of MSRP, which ties monthly payments to it.
  • Positioning. Manufacturers use MSRP to place a model against competitors and within their own lineup.

It is not the same as what the dealer pays. That figure is the invoice price, and even invoice does not fully reflect dealer cost once holdback and incentives are considered.

How MSRP Works

The manufacturer sets MSRP for each model, trim, and option, typically by model year, and may adjust it during the year. The final MSRP on a given vehicle depends on its configuration.

From there, the actual transaction price is shaped by:

  • Manufacturer incentives such as customer cash, special financing, or lease support.
  • Dealer discounts from the dealer’s own margin.
  • Market adjustments added when supply is tight.
  • Dealer add-ons such as accessories, protection products, or fees.

Taxes, title, and registration are added on top and are not part of MSRP.

How MSRP Affects Marketing

How a dealer presents price relative to MSRP has a big influence on clicks, leads, and trust.

Shoppers have learned to spot pricing tricks. Ads that show a low price with conditions buried in fine print, such as stacking every possible rebate most buyers do not qualify for, tend to generate complaints and low close rates. Clear pricing that shows MSRP, the discount, and the resulting price usually builds more trust.

For example, a dealer might list a new SUV with MSRP shown, a dealer discount, a manufacturer rebate available to everyone, and a final price, then note any conditional incentives separately. Shoppers can see exactly how the number was built.

Inventory advertising also depends on MSRP and price accuracy. Vehicle listing ads and marketplaces pull price from your feed, and if the price shown does not match the website, the listing can be disapproved or erode trust when the shopper arrives.

Compliance matters. Federal and state rules address deceptive pricing, and many states require advertised prices to include all charges except taxes and government fees, or have specific rules for add-ons and conditional rebates. Review advertising with someone who knows your state’s rules.

Best Practices

  • Show the math. Display MSRP, discounts, and final price clearly on VDPs and ads.
  • Separate conditional offers. List loyalty, military, or conquest rebates separately rather than baking them into the headline price.
  • Disclose add-ons. Make dealer-installed items and market adjustments visible, not hidden.
  • Keep feeds in sync. Ensure ad platforms, marketplaces, and your site show the same price.
  • Know your state rules. Advertising requirements differ, so build compliant templates once and reuse them.
