Backlinks

Definition

Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Search engines treat relevant, trusted backlinks as votes of confidence that can improve your rankings.

Four factors that decide a backlink's value: relevance, authority, context and anchor text.

Backlinks, also called inbound links, are links on other websites that point to your site. If a local news site writes about your shop and links to your homepage, that’s a backlink. Links between pages on your own site are different. Those are internal links.

Backlinks have been central to search engine ranking since the early days of Google, because a link from one site to another works like a reference or recommendation.

Backlinks help in several ways:

  • Rankings: Search engines use links as one of many signals of authority and relevance. Pages with stronger, more relevant link profiles tend to rank better, all else being equal.
  • Discovery: Search engine crawlers follow links to find new pages.
  • Referral traffic: A link from a popular, relevant page can send real visitors and customers.
  • Trust and visibility: Being cited by respected sources builds credibility with people and with AI search tools that draw on well-referenced sources.

Not all backlinks are equal. One link from a relevant, well-regarded site is typically worth more than many links from low-quality directories or unrelated sites. Quality and relevance beat raw link counts every time.

When evaluating a backlink, search engines look at factors such as:

  • Relevance: Is the linking site related to your topic or location?
  • Authority: Is the linking site itself trusted and well linked?
  • Context: Is the link placed naturally within useful content?
  • Anchor text: What words are used in the clickable link?
  • Link attributes: Links marked nofollow, sponsored or ugc tell search engines not to pass full ranking credit, though they can still bring traffic and visibility.

Search engines also look for manipulation. Buying links, link schemes and large networks of low-quality sites violate guidelines and fall under black hat SEO. These can lead to ranking drops or manual penalties.

Automotive businesses have plenty of natural link opportunities tied to their real-world activity:

  • Local sponsorships: Supporting a youth sports team, school program or charity event often earns a link from the organization’s site.
  • Manufacturer and certification listings: OEM-certified collision shops, authorized dealers and certified installers can often be listed in official locator tools.
  • Supplier and brand partners: Parts brands, coating manufacturers and wrap film makers frequently list authorized installers.
  • Car shows and clubs: Sponsoring or participating in events and enthusiast clubs can earn links from event pages.
  • Local press: Community involvement, expansions or helpful expert commentary can earn news coverage.
  • Useful content: A parts brand that publishes a detailed install guide may get linked from forums and enthusiast blogs.

For example, a body shop that hosts a free teen driver safety day might earn links from the local school district, a community calendar and a local news story, all highly relevant to its area.

Best Practices

  • Earn, don’t buy. Focus on relationships, real activities and helpful content that people want to reference.
  • Prioritize relevance. Local and industry-related links are typically more valuable than random high-traffic sites.
  • Claim what you’re owed. Make sure partners, certifiers and sponsors that mention you actually link to you.
  • Create link-worthy assets. Guides, tools and original local resources attract links over time.
  • Monitor your profile. Watch for spammy links and sudden changes, but don’t panic over a few low-quality links. Search engines generally ignore random junk links that every site picks up over time.
