SERP (Search Engine Results Page)

Definition

A SERP (search engine results page) is the page a search engine shows after a query, mixing ads, organic listings, maps, AI answers and other features.

Main sections of a search results page: AI answers, paid ads, local pack and organic results.

What Is a SERP (Search Engine Results Page)?

A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page you see after typing or speaking a query into a search engine such as Google or Bing. It lists the results the search engine considers most relevant, along with ads and a growing range of special features.

Early SERPs were simple lists of ten blue links. Today’s SERPs are dynamic and vary by query, location, device and user. A single page can include paid ads, a map with local businesses, shopping results, videos, images, “People also ask” boxes, featured snippets, and AI-generated summaries, all before the traditional organic results.

Why the SERP Matters

The SERP is where searchers decide which business gets their click. Understanding it helps you:

  • See which formats Google favors for your target searches.
  • Understand why traffic changes even when rankings stay the same, for example because a new feature pushed organic results lower.
  • Choose the right mix of paid ads, organic content and local listings.
  • Write listings that stand out against what competitors show.

How the SERP Works

Paid Results

Text ads usually appear at the top and bottom of the page, labeled as sponsored. Shopping ads with product images may appear for product searches, and vehicle ads may appear for some car shopping searches.

Organic Results

Unpaid listings ranked by relevance, quality and authority. Each shows a title, URL and description, sometimes enhanced with rich snippets like ratings or prices.

Local Pack

For searches with local intent, a map and a short list of businesses appear, drawn from Google Business Profile listings.

SERP Features

Featured snippets, “People also ask,” image and video packs, knowledge panels, top stories, and site links can all appear depending on the query.

AI-Generated Answers

Search engines increasingly show AI summaries at the top of the page that answer questions directly and cite sources. Being cited in these summaries has become a goal of its own.

SERPs in Automotive Marketing

  • “Near me” searches: For queries like “body shop near me” or “tire shop near me,” the local pack often dominates the visible screen on mobile. A strong Google Business Profile, with reviews, photos and accurate categories, can matter as much as the website.
  • Dealership searches: Model shopping queries can trigger vehicle ads, local dealer listings, manufacturer pages and third-party marketplaces, which means dealers compete with large listing sites for attention.
  • Repair questions: Symptom searches often show “People also ask” boxes, videos and AI summaries, rewarding clear, expert answers.
  • Parts searches: Shopping results and marketplace listings frequently appear first, making product feeds and structured data important.
  • Towing: Urgent searches surface call buttons from ads and the local pack, so phone visibility is essential.

For example, a wrap shop might find that searches for “vinyl wrap cost” show a large AI summary and a video carousel, suggesting that a clear pricing guide and a short explainer video could earn more visibility than another blog post.

Best Practices

  • Search your own keywords. Look at real SERPs on mobile and desktop, from your service area, to see what you are up against.
  • Target the features that appear. Optimize for local packs, snippets, videos or shopping depending on the query.
  • Write compelling titles and descriptions. Your listing has to earn the click against nearby competitors.
  • Use structured data. It helps qualify your pages for enhanced results.
  • Combine paid and organic. Owning both an ad and an organic or map listing increases your share of the page.
  • Track SERP changes. New features can shift click patterns, so monitor click-through rates as well as rankings.
