What Is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile (GBP) is Google’s free tool that lets businesses manage how they appear in Google Search and Google Maps. It was previously called Google My Business and was renamed in 2021. A profile typically shows your business name, address or service area, phone number, hours, website, categories, photos, products or services, reviews and posts.
For many local businesses, the Business Profile is the first impression customers get, often before they ever visit the website.
Why Google Business Profile Matters
When people search for local services, Google often shows a map with a small set of businesses, known as the local pack, near the top of the search results page. Those listings come from Business Profiles.
- Local visibility. A strong profile improves your chances of appearing in map results and the local pack.
- Direct actions. Customers can call, get directions, visit your website or message you straight from the listing.
- Trust. Reviews, photos and complete information help customers choose you over competitors.
- Free traffic. Profile visibility generates leads without paying for clicks.
How Google Business Profile Works
Google has said local rankings are influenced mainly by three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the location in the query) and prominence (how well known and well regarded your business is, including reviews and other web signals).
Key profile elements include:
- Primary and secondary categories, which strongly affect which searches you appear for.
- Accurate name, address and phone, consistent with your website and other directories.
- Hours, including holiday and special hours.
- Services and products with descriptions.
- Photos and videos of your location, team and work.
- Reviews and responses.
- Posts for offers, updates and events.
- Attributes such as accessibility features or amenities.
Businesses must verify ownership before managing the profile. Google’s guidelines prohibit stuffing keywords into the business name and creating profiles for locations that do not genuinely serve customers.
Google Business Profile in Automotive Marketing
For local automotive businesses, the Business Profile is often a top source of calls and visits:
- Collision and repair shops benefit from accurate categories, detailed service lists, photos of completed work and a steady flow of reviews. Many drivers choose a shop after an accident based on proximity and ratings.
- Dealerships often have separate departments, such as sales, service and parts, each with its own hours and phone numbers. Google allows department listings in some cases, which can help customers reach the right team.
- Towing companies and mobile detailers that serve customers at their location can set a service area instead of showing an address.
- Tire shops can highlight brands carried and services such as alignments or seasonal changeovers.
For example, a body shop that changes its primary category to the most accurate collision-related option, adds its OEM certifications to its description, uploads recent repair photos and asks every customer for a review could see stronger local discoverability over time.
Best Practices
- Choose categories carefully. Pick the most specific primary category and add relevant secondary ones.
- Keep information accurate. Update hours, phone numbers and holiday schedules promptly.
- Ask for reviews consistently. Build review requests into your normal process and respond to every review professionally.
- Add fresh photos regularly. Show real work, staff, vehicles and your facility.
- List all services. Detailed services help you appear for more specific searches.
- Track results. Use UTM tags on your website link and monitor calls and direction requests.
