Multi-Point Inspection (MPI)

Definition

A multi-point inspection (MPI) is a standardized check of a vehicle's key systems during a service visit, used to spot needed maintenance and repairs.

MPI ratings: green means good, yellow needs attention soon, red needs attention now.

What Is a Multi-Point Inspection (MPI)?

A multi-point inspection is a structured checklist that a technician completes when a vehicle comes in for service. It covers the items most likely to need attention, such as:

  • Tire tread depth, condition, and pressure
  • Brake pad and rotor condition
  • Fluid levels and condition
  • Battery health
  • Belts, hoses, and filters
  • Wipers, lights, and horn
  • Suspension, steering, and exhaust components
  • Visible leaks

Results are usually rated green (good), yellow (needs attention soon), or red (needs attention now). Dealers and independent shops use MPIs on nearly every visit, from oil changes to major repairs.

Why Multi-Point Inspections Matter

The MPI is one of the most important tools in a service department.

  • Customer safety. It catches worn brakes, tires, and other issues before they become dangerous.
  • Revenue. Identifying needed work turns a basic visit into additional customer pay repairs, a key driver of fixed operations profit.
  • Trust. A documented inspection shows the customer what was checked and why work is recommended.
  • Future marketing. Recorded results become the basis for follow-up reminders on items the customer chose to delay.

How a Multi-Point Inspection Works

  1. Check-in. The advisor writes the repair order and notes customer concerns.
  2. Inspection. The technician completes the checklist, recording measurements such as tread depth and brake pad thickness.
  3. Documentation. In a digital MPI, the technician adds photos or short videos of problem areas.
  4. Pricing. The advisor or parts team prices recommended work.
  5. Presentation. The customer receives the results, often by text with a link to view photos, videos, and prices and approve work.
  6. Follow-up. Declined items are saved and used for future reminders.

Common performance metrics include MPI completion rate, the share of ROs with recommended work, the approval rate of recommended work, and additional revenue per RO.

How Multi-Point Inspections Affect Marketing

The MPI is where service marketing gets its most personal and useful data.

Declined recommendations are a ready-made marketing list. Instead of sending every customer a generic coupon, a shop can send targeted messages, such as a reminder to replace tires that measured close to the legal limit, with a link to book. Those messages tend to feel helpful rather than promotional because they reflect the customer’s own vehicle.

Digital MPIs also improve service lane marketing. A short video of a technician pointing to a leaking hose often explains the need better than any advisor script, which can raise approval rates and reduce the sense of being upsold.

For example, an independent repair shop could connect its digital MPI tool with its email and text platform. Customers who decline brake work get a reminder two weeks later, then another at their next expected service date, each with the original photos attached.

The inspection is also a brand promise. Shops that advertise a “free inspection with every visit” must deliver a real, thorough check, or reviews will reflect it.

Best Practices

  • Inspect every vehicle. Make MPI completion a standard, measured part of every visit.
  • Go digital. Use photos and video to show customers what the technician found.
  • Price before presenting. Give customers clear prices and options rather than vague recommendations.
  • Save declined work. Store it in your CRM and build automated, specific reminders.
  • Be honest about urgency. Use red and yellow ratings accurately so customers trust your recommendations.
  • Review MPI metrics weekly. Track completion, recommendation, and approval rates by technician and advisor to spot coaching opportunities early.
