Conquest Marketing

Definition

Conquest marketing targets customers of competing brands or businesses to win them away, such as a dealer reaching owners of rival vehicle makes.

Comparison of loyalty marketing to existing customers versus conquest marketing to rival-brand owners.

What Is Conquest Marketing?

Conquest marketing is the practice of targeting shoppers or owners who currently buy from a competitor and persuading them to switch. In automotive, it most often refers to a dealership going after owners of competing brands, such as a Ford store marketing to people who drive Chevrolet or Ram trucks. The same idea applies to service departments courting customers who use independent shops, body shops pursuing drivers who currently go to rival collision centers and aftermarket brands targeting buyers of a competitor’s product.

It is the opposite of loyalty or retention marketing, which focuses on customers you already have. Healthy businesses usually run both.

Why Conquest Marketing Matters

Growth eventually requires taking share. Your existing customer base is finite, and some of it will leave for life reasons outside your control. Conquest marketing is how a business adds new buyers to the top of its funnel.

  • Market share: OEMs often measure dealers partly on share within their area of responsibility, which can mean winning sales away from other brands.
  • Volume growth: conquest buyers are incremental sales rather than repeat purchases.
  • Future service revenue: a conquest sale can turn into years of service visits if the customer is retained well.
  • Competitive pressure: if you are not conquesting, your rivals are likely targeting your customers.

How Conquest Marketing Works

Conquest campaigns combine audience targeting with a specific reason to switch.

  • Competitor keywords: bidding on searches for rival models, comparisons or competitor dealer names where platform policies allow, while avoiding trademark misuse in ad copy.
  • Owner data: using compliant third-party registration or ownership data to reach people who own a specific competing vehicle.
  • In-market audiences: targeting shoppers researching a competing model or segment on search, social and connected TV.
  • Geofencing and location targeting: reaching people near competitor dealerships or shops, where allowed.
  • Conquest incentives: manufacturers sometimes offer cash to buyers who currently own or lease a competing brand.

The message matters as much as the targeting. Conquest creative works best with a sharp comparison or offer: better warranty, more cargo space, lower payment or a faster appointment.

How Conquest Marketing Affects Marketing

For a dealership, a typical play is a “compare and save” campaign for a core model. For example, a Toyota store might run search ads on queries comparing the Honda CR-V and RAV4, sending traffic to a side-by-side comparison page with live inventory and any conquest incentive in plain view.

Service departments can conquest too. A dealer service lane might target owners of its brand who bought elsewhere or who use quick-lube chains, using OEM-parts and certified-technician messaging. A collision shop might go after drivers of a brand it is OEM certified for, stressing factory repair procedures. Aftermarket parts brands can target shoppers searching for a rival product with comparison content and reviews.

Conquest audiences are colder than existing customers, so expect a higher customer acquisition cost and a longer path to purchase. Plan to nurture them with remarketing rather than expecting the first ad to close the deal.

Best Practices

  • Give people a concrete reason to switch, such as a specific feature advantage, incentive or service promise.
  • Build dedicated comparison landing pages instead of sending conquest traffic to a generic homepage.
  • Follow platform trademark rules and keep comparisons accurate and verifiable.
  • Measure conquest separately, using lower conversion expectations and a longer attribution window than loyalty campaigns.
  • Hand conquest customers off to a strong retention program so you keep the share you worked to win.
