Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL)

Definition

A marketing qualified lead (MQL) is a lead that marketing judges more likely to buy than others, based on fit and engagement, but not yet ready for sales.

Lead lifecycle funnel: raw lead, marketing qualified lead, sales accepted lead, sales qualified lead.

What Is a Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL)?

A marketing qualified lead (MQL) is a prospect who has shown enough interest and fits your target customer profile well enough that marketing considers them worth further attention. They’ve done something meaningful, like downloading a guide, attending a webinar, visiting pricing pages several times, or requesting information, but they haven’t yet been confirmed by sales as ready for a direct sales conversation.

MQLs sit in the middle of the lead lifecycle. Before them are raw leads, contacts who have only provided basic information. After them come sales accepted leads (SALs) and sales qualified leads (SQLs), which sales has reviewed and confirmed as genuine opportunities.

Why Marketing Qualified Leads Matter

Not every lead deserves a sales call. Sending every form fill straight to a salesperson wastes time on people who are only browsing, and it can annoy prospects who aren’t ready. The MQL stage acts as a filter.

A clear MQL definition helps you:

  • Focus sales effort on prospects most likely to buy.
  • Identify leads that need more nurturing before a sales conversation.
  • Measure marketing on lead quality, not just lead volume.
  • Create a shared language between marketing and sales about what a “good lead” is.

How Marketing Qualified Leads Work

Most businesses define MQLs using two types of criteria:

  1. Fit: Does the lead match your ideal customer? For B2B, that may include company size, industry, role, or location. For consumers, it may include location, vehicle type, or service need.
  2. Engagement: Has the lead shown buying interest through actions like repeat visits, high-intent page views, content downloads, or email clicks?

Many teams combine these into a lead scoring model, assigning points for each attribute and behavior. When a lead passes a set threshold, it becomes an MQL and is routed to sales or a sales development rep for follow-up. Leads that don’t meet the threshold stay in nurturing programs.

The MQL-to-SQL conversion rate is a key health check. If sales consistently rejects MQLs, the definition is probably too loose.

Marketing Qualified Leads in Automotive Marketing

The MQL concept fits most naturally in B2B and longer sales cycles, but it applies across the industry in different forms:

  • Automotive SaaS: A dealer software company might mark a lead as an MQL when a general manager from a franchise dealership downloads a guide and later visits the pricing page.
  • Dealerships: Dealers rarely use the term MQL, but the idea still applies. A shopper who uses a payment calculator, views multiple vehicle detail pages, and saves a vehicle is more qualified than someone who submitted a generic contact form. Lead management tools can prioritize those shoppers for faster follow-up.
  • Fleet and commercial sales: A body shop or repair shop selling fleet maintenance programs could treat a fleet manager who requests a rate sheet as an MQL before arranging a sales meeting.
  • High-ticket services: A PPF or wrap shop might consider a quote request with vehicle details and a photo upload more qualified than one with only a name and phone number.

Best Practices

  • Define MQLs with sales. Agree on criteria together so both teams trust the handoff.
  • Combine fit and behavior. Engagement from a poor-fit prospect, or a great fit with no engagement, usually isn’t enough on its own.
  • Track MQL-to-SQL and MQL-to-sale rates. Lead quality matters more than volume.
  • Review the definition regularly. Adjust thresholds as you learn which traits actually predict sales.
  • Respond quickly. An MQL’s interest fades fast. Set clear follow-up time expectations.
  • Nurture the rest. Leads that don’t qualify yet should stay in email or remarketing programs, not be discarded.
