Bottom of Funnel (BOFU) Marketing

Definition

Bottom of funnel (BOFU) marketing targets people who are ready to buy, using offers, proof and easy next steps to turn high intent into a sale or booking.

Marketing funnel with TOFU, MOFU and BOFU stages, highlighting bottom-of-funnel goals and tactics.

What Is Bottom of Funnel (BOFU) Marketing?

Bottom of funnel (BOFU) marketing focuses on prospects who are close to making a decision. They already know their problem, they’ve looked at options, and now they’re choosing who to buy from. BOFU marketing gives them the final reasons and the easiest path to act.

It’s the last stage of the classic marketing funnel. Top of funnel (TOFU) marketing builds awareness, middle of funnel (MOFU) marketing helps people evaluate, and bottom of funnel marketing converts.

Why BOFU Marketing Matters

Bottom-funnel audiences are smaller, but they’re the closest to revenue. BOFU matters because:

  • Conversion rates are highest here. People with clear intent convert far more readily than casual browsers.
  • Small leaks are costly. A confusing booking form or slow follow-up at this stage throws away demand you already paid to create.
  • Competition is intense. Competitors bid on the same high-intent searches, so your offer and proof must stand out.
  • Results are measurable. BOFU activity ties directly to leads, sales and revenue.

The trap is relying only on BOFU. If nobody fills the top of the funnel, the pool of ready buyers eventually shrinks and costs rise. Bottom-funnel campaigns harvest demand. They rarely create much of it on their own, so they work best as part of a full-funnel plan.

How BOFU Marketing Works

BOFU tactics remove remaining doubts and make action simple:

  • High-intent search ads: Targeting phrases like “near me,” “price,” “book,” “quote” and specific product or model names.
  • Retargeting: Showing remarketing ads to people who viewed key pages but didn’t convert.
  • Strong offers: Limited-time pricing, free estimates, financing, warranties or bonuses.
  • Proof: Reviews, case studies, before-and-after photos, comparisons and guarantees.
  • Frictionless conversion: Short forms, tap-to-call, online booking, live chat and clear pricing.
  • Fast follow-up: Responding to leads quickly while interest is at its peak.

Success is measured with metrics such as conversion rate, cost per acquisition, appointment show rate and close rate.

BOFU Marketing in Automotive Marketing

  • Dealerships: Vehicle listing ads, model-specific search campaigns, retargeting people who viewed vehicle detail pages, and offers like a test drive appointment or trade-in appraisal.
  • Collision shops: Search and map ads for “collision repair near me,” paired with photo-based estimate requests, insurance guidance and a fast callback.
  • Repair and tire shops: Service-specific ads like “brake repair today” that lead to online booking with real availability.
  • Detailers and PPF shops: Retargeting past quote visitors with package pricing, installer certifications and limited-time add-ons.
  • Parts brands: Shopping ads, cart abandonment emails and fitment confirmation to push buyers over the line.

For example, a dealer might retarget shoppers who viewed the same used truck several times with an ad showing that exact vehicle and a “Schedule a Test Drive” button. A repair shop could send a reminder text to someone who started an online booking but didn’t finish, with a direct link back to the open time slots.

Best Practices

  • Match the offer to the intent. Someone searching for a specific repair wants a price and a time slot, not a brand story.
  • Cut friction everywhere. Test your own forms, booking tools and phone lines as a customer would.
  • Answer objections up front. Address price, warranty, timing and trust directly on the page.
  • Respond fast. Set up alerts and processes so leads are contacted within minutes.
  • Track to the sale. Measure booked appointments, shows and closed deals, not just form fills.
  • Keep feeding the funnel. Balance BOFU spend with awareness so demand doesn’t dry up.
