Real-Time Bidding (RTB)

Definition

Real-time bidding (RTB) is an automated auction where ad impressions are bought and sold in milliseconds as a page or app loads for a specific user.

RTB flow: SSP offers an impression, exchange sends bid requests, DSPs bid, winning ad is served.

What Is Real-Time Bidding (RTB)?

Real-time bidding (RTB) is the automated auction process that decides which ad appears in a given ad slot at the moment someone loads a webpage, app or streaming video. Instead of buying a fixed block of ads in advance, advertisers bid on each individual impression, and the highest qualifying bid wins. The entire auction happens in a fraction of a second, before the page finishes loading.

RTB is the engine behind most programmatic display, video and connected TV advertising. It lets you pay for the specific people you want to reach, in the moment they are available, rather than paying for a site’s entire audience.

Why RTB Matters

RTB changed media buying from a negotiation into a data-driven, impression-by-impression decision. That matters for a few reasons:

  • Precision: you can bid only on impressions that match your target audience, location, device or time of day.
  • Efficiency: you can bid more for high-value users (such as recent site visitors) and less, or nothing, for low-value ones.
  • Scale: RTB connects you to millions of websites and apps through a single buying platform.
  • Measurability: every impression is logged, so you can analyze performance by placement, audience and creative.

How RTB Works

When someone opens a page with an ad slot, a chain of systems runs an auction:

  1. The publisher’s supply-side platform (SSP) announces that an impression is available, along with details such as the site, ad size, approximate location and device.
  2. An ad exchange sends a bid request to many demand-side platforms (DSPs).
  3. Each DSP evaluates the request against its advertisers’ targeting rules and data, then decides whether to bid and how much.
  4. The exchange picks a winner, typically the highest bid that meets the publisher’s floor price, and the winning ad is served.

Pricing is usually on a cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) basis, though optimization goals can be clicks, conversions or video completions. Search ads in platforms like Google Ads also run real-time auctions, but the term RTB usually refers to open programmatic display and video buying.

RTB in Automotive Marketing

Automotive buyers spend weeks researching, which gives RTB plenty of opportunities to stay in front of them:

  • Dealerships use programmatic remarketing to show inventory ads to people who viewed specific vehicles on their site, and use geofencing to reach shoppers near competing stores.
  • Collision shops can target households within their service radius with awareness ads, then bid higher on people who visited their estimate page.
  • Parts and aftermarket brands can reach enthusiasts on automotive forums, review sites and YouTube channels through private marketplace deals.
  • Car shows and events can build short, location-based bursts of connected TV and display ahead of an event date.

For example, a dealer could bid aggressively on users who viewed three or more vehicle pages in the last week, while setting a low bid or excluding users who only bounced from the homepage.

Best Practices

  • Start with first-party audiences. Site visitors, CRM lists and past customers usually outperform broad third-party segments.
  • Control placements. Use exclusion lists and brand safety settings so your ads do not run on low-quality or irrelevant sites.
  • Set frequency caps. Showing the same ad too often wastes budget and annoys prospects.
  • Measure beyond clicks. Display often influences later searches and visits, so look at assisted conversions and incrementality, not just click-through.
  • Watch for invalid traffic. Use verification tools to filter bots and fraudulent inventory.
  • Refresh creative. Rotate ads regularly to avoid fatigue, especially on retargeting campaigns.
